GAF Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
GAF underlayment and deck repair in Ventura typically runs between $400 and $1,800 installed, depending on how much of the roof deck has water damage and which GAF underlayment system your roof was built with. Most failures show up as soft spots in the plywood, water staining on ceilings, or underlayment that’s wrinkled and peeling at the eaves after a few years of marine-layer moisture. We stock GAF-compatible underlayment on the truck and can usually complete most deck repairs in a single day once we’ve opened the roof and confirmed the extent of the rot.
What homeowners usually notice first isn’t the underlayment itself. It’s a drip in the living room during a February storm, or a shingle that’s lifting near a valley where water’s been getting underneath. By the time the underlayment has failed, the decking beneath it has often been wet for months. In Ventura, where the marine layer keeps north-facing roof slopes damp well into the afternoon, underlayment that’s even slightly compromised gets worse faster than homeowners expect.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
We work with the full range of GAF underlayment products, from the baseline Deck-Armor synthetic to StormGuard leak barrier and Tiger Paw high-traction underlayment. The compatibility question matters because GAF’s warranty system ties specific underlayment to specific shingle lines. If your roof has GAF Timberline HDZ shingles, the manufacturer expects a GAF synthetic underlayment beneath them for the full system warranty to apply. A generic felt or off-brand synthetic technically sheds water, but it breaks the GAF system and can void the coverage you thought you had.
There’s a simple way to tell what you have. The underlayment label is usually visible at the eaves or in the attic along the rakes. GAF prints the product name in repeating bands across the roll. Deck-Armor is a gray woven synthetic with that name printed in black. StormGuard is a thick, rubberized gray membrane with a split release film on the back. Tiger Paw is the one with a high-friction top surface, and you’ll see it most often on steep-pitch roofs or anywhere the crew needed safer footing. If you can’t find a label, a photo of the torn edge sent to us is usually enough to identify it. For owners deciding between OEM and aftermarket, the honest answer is that GAF’s warranty structure makes OEM the better call here. The price difference is modest, and the warranty integration is worth more than the savings.

Signs Your GAF Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Ceiling stains that darken after rain. By the time water reaches the ceiling, it has already passed through the shingles, the underlayment, and the deck. The underlayment’s job is to be the last line of defense, and a stain means that line broke. In Ventura homes built before 2000, this often starts around nail holes where the original felt has dried and cracked.
- Soft or spongy roof deck in the attic. If you can push a screwdriver into the plywood from below with moderate pressure, the deck is water-damaged. This is the failure that turns a simple underlayment swap into a deck repair. The good news is that localized soft spots can often be sectioned out and replaced without opening the whole roof.
- Shingles buckling or curling near the eaves. Wet underlayment wrinkles, and wrinkled underlayment telegraphs through the shingles as waves along the roofline. Along Ventura’s beachside neighborhoods, we see this on the northwest-facing slopes that never fully dry between fog cycles.
- Grit or ceiling debris appearing in the attic. When the underlayment degrades, especially old organic felt, it starts to crumble. The fine dust finds its way through the deck seams and onto insulation or stored boxes below.
- Rot staining visible on the underside of the deck. If the plywood has turned dark brown or black in patches, particularly around pipes, valleys, or chimneys, the deck is being fed water from a failed underlayment seam or a flashing breach above it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Ventura, a straightforward underlayment replacement on a standard roof section runs $400 to $900 installed. When the deck beneath it is compromised, adding plywood replacement brings the total to $1,000 to $1,800, depending on whether we’re replacing a sheet or two or rebuilding a larger section. These are installed numbers that include removal of the old underlayment, inspection of every deck seam, fastener replacement, the new GAF underlayment, and reinstallation of the shingles we lifted to do the work.
What drives the range, honestly, is what we find after opening the roof. We never know the full deck condition until the shingles come off and the underlayment is peeled back. That’s why our written price is based on what’s visible and why we walk you through any change with a line-item explanation before we do it. You’ll see the number in writing before any work starts, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every underlayment and deck repair we perform. If the work isn’t right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things a Ventura homeowner can safely do before calling us. You can inspect the attic decking for soft spots and dark staining after a heavy rain, and you can photograph the underlayment label at the eaves so we know exactly what system we’re matching. Both save time and help us price the job accurately before we arrive.
What you shouldn’t do is peel back the underlayment yourself or attempt a patch. A torn underlayment seam is a water entry point, and a partial repair that looks sealed from above often leaks anyway because the lap direction is wrong or the fasteners weren’t set through the old nail holes. Walking the roof while lifting shingles also puts you at height with no fall protection, and pushing a knee through a soft deck section is a real risk. This is a repair where the cost of getting it wrong is another ceiling stain and a second repair bill. If the deck feels soft underfoot, call us at (350) 240-5534 and we’ll inspect it properly.
FAQs
GAF synthetic underlayment is engineered to last 25 to 30 years under proper conditions, but Ventura’s marine layer, salt air near the coast, and long damp season can shorten that to 15 to 20 years on north-facing slopes if the attic isn’t well-ventilated. We see older organic felt failing at 12 to 15 years here. A roof inspection every few years catches it before it feeds water into the deck. Call (350) 240-5534 to set up a check on your roof’s condition.
Small tears or wind-lifted sections can sometimes be re-secured and sealed with a compatible GAF product, but true underlayment failure usually means the material has lost its water-shedding ability across a wider area and patching just moves the leak. We’ll tell you honestly which situation you have after opening the section. For an exact assessment, call (350) 240-5534.
Most underlayment replacements with one or two sheets of deck repair are completed in a single day. Larger deck replacements, or jobs where we discover significantly more rot than expected, can run two days. We’ll set expectations in writing before work starts, and we’ll tell you if the schedule changes the moment we know. Call (350) 240-5534 for a timeline on your roof.
We keep Deck-Armor and StormGuard on the truck along with standard CDX plywood for deck replacement, so most underlayment repairs in Ventura can start the day we inspect. Tiger Paw and less common GAF specialty products may need a day’s lead time from our supplier. We also stock Owens Corning and CertainTeed underlayment equivalents for homeowners whose roof system is tied to those brands. Call (350) 240-5534 and a live person will confirm what we have available.
Erik Lindgren grew up in Los Angeles and learned the trade through the construction program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before spending nearly three decades on roofs up and down the California coast. He and his crew know Ventura’s Midtown neighborhood well, where the older craftsman homes and coastal weather keep a roofer honest. As Erik puts it: “A roof should outlast the paperwork – so we make sure both are done right.” Here at Birchbark Roofing Ventura, that means a written price before any work starts, shoe covers and drop cloths on every visit, pet-safe product choices where there’s a choice, and a photo of the completed clean-up before the crew leaves. Birchbark Roofing Ventura is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with GAF.
