Tamko Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
Tamko underlayment and deck repair in Ventura typically runs $850 – $2,400 installed depending on the square footage affected, the deck condition underneath, and whether we’re doing a targeted patch or a full underlayment replacement. We stock Tamko-compatible synthetic underlayment, deck repair materials, and fasteners on our trucks, so most Ventura jobs wrap up in a single day. You usually discover this repair is needed the same way our Midtown customers do: a leak that shows up as a ceiling stain after the first real rain of the season, or granules in the gutter that trace back to a deck seam that’s been quietly softening for years. The marine layer doesn’t help either. It keeps roof decks damp by morning, which gives any small gap in the underlayment a head start.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
This work applies broadly across Tamko’s residential roofing lines, including Heritage shingles, StormFighter FLEX, MetalWorks, and the underlayment products Tamko sells alongside them: TW Underlayment, Moisture Wrap 220, and AWA-Self Adhered. The compatibility gotcha most Ventura homeowners run into is that Tamko’s self-adhered underlayment products are not interchangeable with GAF, Owens Corning, or CertainTeed peel-and-stick sheets. Each manufacturer rates its adhesives for different deck surfaces and temperature ranges, and mixing them can void the shingle warranty above. If your roof deck has been repaired with the wrong underlayment, we’ll see it immediately. The deck side matters too: Tamko specifies APA-rated plywood or OSB at 3/8″ minimum for most residential decks, and we’ve pulled more than one Ventura roof apart to find 1/4″ sheathing that was never rated for the span. OEM Tamko underlayment is our default for warranty continuity. A quality aftermarket equivalent, like a UL-rated synthetic from Owens Corning or CertainTeed, is a reasonable option when the shingle warranty has already expired and the homeowner wants a different price point. You’ll see both options in writing before we touch anything. Birchbark Roofing Ventura is an independent roofing company and isn’t affiliated with Tamko, but we install their products regularly and know their warranty documentation well.

Signs Your Tamko Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on ceilings or upper walls. This is the classic first signal. The shingle above may look fine, but a torn or improperly lapped underlayment seam is letting water travel sideways before it finds a crack in the deck. In Ventura’s winter rains, this shows up as a slow brown stain rather than an obvious drip.
- Soft spots in the roof deck. If you can see a visible dip or the roof feels spongy underfoot, the plywood or OSB is compromised. We find this most often near valleys and around plumbing penetrations, where water sat against the deck for months before anyone noticed.
- Granules accumulating in gutters. Shingle granules wear off naturally, but a sudden, concentrated buildup near one area often means the deck is flexing underneath. Flexing breaks the shingle seal and grinds the granules loose. The shingle didn’t fail first. The deck did.
- Musty attic odor or damp insulation. Underlayment failure that hasn’t caused a ceiling stain yet still lets moisture into the attic space. In Ventura’s humidity, that damp insulation smell is often the only clue for months.
- Elevated nails or nail pops pushing through shingles. When the deck softens, nails lose their grip and work upward. You’ll see small bumps or lifted shingle tabs. This is a deck-failure symptom, not a fastener problem, and it won’t improve on its own.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most Ventura underlayment and deck repair jobs land in the $850 – $2,400 range. A small, localized deck patch with new underlayment around a single penetration runs toward the low end. A full underlayment replacement over an entire roof face, including new decking sheets where needed, runs higher. What drives the number: how many sheets of plywood or OSB must be replaced, whether we can reach everything from the existing roof or need full shingle removal in the area, and which Tamko underlayment product matches your existing system. Every estimate includes the tear-off and disposal of the old material, new decking where needed, new underlayment with proper overlap and fastener schedule, and re-installation of shingles or replacement shingles where the old ones are too worn to reuse. You’ll see the full line-item price in writing before any work starts. Our work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right. Erik Lindgren walks every customer through the scope before a single nail goes in. A roof should outlast the paperwork, so we make sure both are done right.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here. As a homeowner in Ventura, you can absolutely inspect your own gutters for granules, look for visible shingle bumps from the ground, and check your attic for damp insulation after heavy rain. Those are safe checks that help you catch problems early. But deck repair is not a weekend project. Cutting out rotted plywood on a sloped roof, properly lapping Tamko self-adhered underlayment, and re-nailing shingles to manufacturer spec requires experience, the right fall-protection setup, and genuine familiarity with how water moves on a Southern California roof. We’ve fixed enough DIY deck patches in Ventura to know they usually fail within two seasons. The materials cost isn’t the expensive part. Doing it twice is. If your roof is showing any of the signs above, call (350) 240-5534. We’ll come out, assess the deck condition, and give you a written price before anything gets touched.
FAQs
Tamko’s synthetic underlayments are designed to last 25 – 30 years when properly installed over a sound deck, which matches the expected life of most Tamko shingle lines in the Ventura climate. The underlayment isn’t usually what fails first. It’s the deck beneath it. In coastal Ventura neighborhoods where morning marine layer keeps roofs damp, a poorly ventilated attic can cut that lifespan noticeably. Call (350) 240-5534 if you’re wondering about your specific roof’s age and condition. Estimates are free.
Yes, in many cases. If the deck damage is localized to one or two sheets of plywood and the surrounding underlayment is still intact and properly adhered, a targeted repair is the right call. We cut out the bad section, replace the decking, splice in new Tamko-compatible underlayment with generous overlap, and re-install the shingles. The decision comes down to how widespread the water damage is. We’ll show you photos of what we find under the shingles so you can see exactly why we’re recommending repair or full replacement.
A localized deck repair with new underlayment typically takes one day. A full underlayment replacement across one roof face usually takes one to two days, depending on how many decking sheets need to be swapped and whether Ventura’s weather cooperates. We’ll give you a clear timeline in the written estimate. The crew brings shoe covers and drop cloths inside if we need attic access, and you’ll get a photo of the completed clean-up before we leave.
Yes. We keep Tamko-compatible synthetic underlayment, moisture barriers, plywood and OSB decking, and matching fasteners on our trucks for most common residential applications. For specialty Tamko products like AWA-Self Adhered, we’ll have it ordered and on-site before your scheduled repair day. If our team needs to pull materials from another supplier to match your exact roof, you’ll know before the job is scheduled, not after. We also work with materials from GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed. Call (350) 240-5534 and a live person will answer, day or night.
